Hi,
I am currently on F-1 visa and will be submitting my documents for COS to H4 today. Do I need to continue to go to college and maintain my F-1 till my H-4 gets approved? Is it possible for me to drop from college once I get receipt confirmation from USCIS? If yes, what would my status be in that case?

You must maintain present status. If you are changing from status A to status B, then you are considered to be in status A till status B is approved. If you let status A expire, then part of the information in your status change application will become incorrect. This does not apply if status A expires normally while decision on status B is still pending. I hope my answer was not too confusing.
