Transferring Major from Non-Stem to Stem after graduation

Hi

I was not selected in this years H1B Lottery and I have a Non-STEM Major. I graduated in May 2020 with a MA in Accounting, and have been working on OPT, which expires in June.

My lawyer has advised me to connect with the International Student office and Dean of University to see if they can change the program CIP code on my I20 from MA in Accounting to MS in Accounting where MS is a STEM Approved program. This would allow me to apply for STEM Extension and continue working at my firm and gamble in the next lottery.

  1. Is this even possible? Can the university change program CIP codes and issue new I20 after graduation?
  2. Will this impact the next H1B application and subsequent GC with USCIS?

Thank You
