To obtain the CGI reference no is it required to submit the DS-160 form?

Whilst I am trying to obatin the CGI number there is a mandatory field “DS-160 Confirmation number”. Maybe this question is pretty silly but can you please let me know when do we receive a ? (i.e. Do we receive the confirmation number once we initiate the DS-160 form OR only after the DS-160 form is submitted?)

You receive the confirmation no when you initiate DS 160 form. But it is prudent but not mandatory that you fill ds 160 no only after you submit ds 160 form and obtain confirmation printout
