Time delay for social security number

I will be entering the US on an H1B visa in August. My employer requires that I have a SSN by the time I start employment. I will be driving in frm Canada, so crossing at a land POE.

I’m wondering if other people have had experience applying for a SSN after arriving from Canada, and if so, how long the process took. My understanding is that the large delay in the process is the USCIS updating the DHS database with your visa status. With the recent automation of the I94 process at air and sea ports of entry, does this speed up the processing for those crossing the land border?

Any recent experiences from people crossing from Canada (or possibly Mexico) would be appreciated. Thanks!
