MS in US after 7 year of work experience.

I have 5 years of experience in IT industry. I have a B.Tech in computer science from NIT - Allahabad.

I have worked in 2 companies till now

Wells Fargo India Solutions - Campus placement - 1.5 yrs

Samsung India - 3.5 years.

I think that i should go for MS which will help me progress in my industry both in working and for promotions.

I will be able to apply for MS next year only whic mean by the time i go to an university i will have some 7 years of work experience.

I have the following questions wrt to MS in US

1) How difficult/easy will it be to get a job in US after my MS ?

2) If i get a job will i start from the lowest level or i will be given advantage as per my experience ?

3) If i want to change my stream after MS(like i work in telecom domain(Samsung) now and want to go to another domain/company like Amazon) will i be able to change my domain and how difficult or easy will it be ?

4) And if i am able to change my domain, will i have to start from the bottom ?

5) How difficult will it be to get H1B visa after that ?

6) And most important is it worth investing so much in a MS degree for the reasons that i have mentioned ?

Thanks in advance.
  1. How difficult/easy will it be to get a job in US after my MS ?

It depends…if you plan it well, you should get a job. But, you need to be clear with the H1B Visa lottery. Read MS in USA with H1B Lottery

    1. If i get a job will i start from the lowest level or i will be given advantage as per my experience ?

It depends on what you apply for…Your previous experience does help, but may not gurantee…

    1. If i want to change my stream after MS(like i work in telecom domain(Samsung) now and want to go to another domain/company like Amazon) will i be able to change my domain and how difficult or easy will it be ?

There is nothing that is stopping you from changing domain. It is up to you to find a sutiable job that fits your profie. You may miss some prior expereince as experience and start over.

    1. And if i am able to change my domain, will i have to start from the bottom ?

You may…it is hard to say…You need to position yourself so that you do NOT start over again from square one.

    1. How difficult will it be to get H1B visa after that ?

As mentioned above, getting H1B Visa is a lottery with the current situation. If the Comprehensive immigration reform passes, there could be more hope.

    1. And most important is it worth investing so much in a MS degree for the reasons that i have mentioned ?

In summary, your goal for higher education should be driven by passion. With the current situation of work visa in USA, you need to prepared to come back to India, if you happen to be unlucky...pursuing higher education with an end goal of working in USA, rather than passion could be tricky...be clear on your goals and puruse your passion.

Hi,

I think it all depends on luck, because for an IT guy, getting a job is easy in US with genuine experience. So, there won’t be any problem, I have my friend who came to US on MS, even though he has done his M.Tech in India , and now he has around 7-8 years…experience , so there is no issue. If you take the risk, and if you are lucky to get H1 , then I don’t think there will any problem, and you can earn lot of money compared to India , with limited working hours…
