Hi, Everyone!
I am in a a bit of a pickle and need some help.
I was waiting for my 2023 state tax return and when it didn’t come, I called NCDOR ( North Carolina Dept. of Revenue). They told me I forgot to file my 2018 taxes ( I filed 2018 federal tax return but missed NC tax return) and as a part of that, I owe them:
$3,500 taxes for 2018,
$3,000 penalty and
$1,000 interest.
A total of $7,500.
So they applied $2,000 towards that amount and sent me a letter to pay remaining $5,500.
So with the help of a tax agent, I prepared tax for 2018 for NC and I get a refund of $60.
But he told me e-filing is closed now so I have to send it manually.
It might take 12 weeks to get processed.
So I have following questions:
Is there no way I can e-file 2018 NC State Tax? I fear if I file paper copy, it will take 12 weeks to process and my dues might get sent to collections.
If there is no way to e-file, where do I send it to? Getting conflicting information from the agents.
Since I am getting a refund and I don't owe any taxes, is it true that once my taxes gets processed:
My penalty will be waived off
My interest will be waived off
I will get my $60 refund
I will also get my 2000 refund for 2023 which was applied for 2018.
The agents at NCDOR were not any helpful in explaining anything.
Any help and advice is greatly appreciated.
