My H1B was granted in August 2001 and was extended to run until September 2007. I left the US in July 2005. I know that I should be able to renew the old visa but has it now been too long ? Did my Visa just need to be ‘active’ inside six years from new application?

Like Sujith mentioned, you should check w/ an immigration lawyer. Usually they allow cap-exempt petitions only if the original petition was approved in previous 6 years. So it would be better to clarify w/ an attorney.
