H1 to H4 conversion. When to stop working on H1?

Hello Folks, I am wondering if you can help me with this question.
I am currently working on H1B. But, I would like to stop working due to some personal reasons, and hence would like to change status to H4 based on my spouse’s H1B. Once I apply for Change of Status(COS) to H4, when can I stop working?
1)Should I really wait for H4 to be approved? ;or
2)Can I stop working anytime after H4 application receipt is received? I am worried if this is considered as out of status; or
3) Anything else?

I have read few forums and found different answers (1 & 2 above)

You can stop working only when your COS request is approved. You need to maintain your status until H4 is approved.

  2. No. You need to maintain status.
  3. The other option is to leave the country and re-enter after stamping.

Talk to your H1B attorney and clarify.
