H1 extension after expiry living outside US

Hi, My H1 got approved in 2007 and exp in oct 2010. I have stayed only for 6 months in US i.e., from Sep 2008 to apr 2009. Now I want to apply for extension.
Can my H1 extend? If yes how long it can be?

I think you can go for cap-exempt filing with same or another employer. Once your petition is approved and VISA is stamped, you can stay in US for another 5 years and 6 months (with periodic extension of H1B).

Since this is the last year during which you can reuse the cap, please have it confirmed with any good immigration attorney.
