H-1B Stamping - CBP fine - curry leaves during last entry- Impact?

Background: I’m currently on H-1B, full-time, and Non-IT background. Visiting India during November and December of this year. Attending a visa interview during the first week of December.

Situation: I’ve gone to India during 2017-18. while returning, at the port of entry, during the checking, I was found with a bag of dried curry leaves. Before the check when the officer asked me whether I’m carrying any plant-related products, I said ‘NO’ as I wasn’t aware that they were in the bag (not justifying my self, it was a clear mistake on my side). I was fined $300 for carrying the leaves.

Question: 1. What kind of questions I could expect from the interviewer during the Visa Interview.

  1. Could this be a reason to give me a 221-G or to reject the visa?

  2. Any points for me to consider.

Please suggest. Thank you in advance for your responses.

Well, don’t worry too much. You could be fined, if you carry even an apple…You can get fined up to $500 for first time…it usually impacts your Global Entry Program,
Now, coming to actual visa stamping, you should be fine in general…If they ask, share honestly regarding your mistake, you will be fine. State the truth, be honest, nothing to worry.

Also, do share your visa interview experience after you are done here for community benefit.

Will definitely do. Thank you for your response.

Congratulations ! Thanks for sharing !

Thank you. I have a question maybe you could help me with it.

Currently, my employer is planning to initiate PERM process for me and the attorney has sent me a questionnaire to fill out. One of the question says below.

“Have you ever been arrested, cited, charged, indicted, fined or imprisoned for breaking or violating any laws or any ordinance, excluding minor traffic violations?”

Since I was fined for carrying curry leaves, do I have to say YES or NO for the question? Please advise.

Thank you very much!!
