FNU No longer an issue in 2019?

Hi friends,

I’ve recently completed a masters in the US and I’m working under OPT. My employer has applied for H1B this year
I’m a classic FNU case from India (no surname) and have my name listed differently everywhere

I-20: FNU myFirstName myLastName
SSA: No Name Given myfirstName myLastName
California DL: [Blank] myFirstname myLastName
I-94: Clusterf***, every visit since 2012 (9 total) has my name a different way depending on the creativity of the border officer

However, I have had NO issues so far because of this.

  • Every immigration process (F1 visa, new passport issue, F1 re-application, OPT, STEM extension) and US official process (SSA, DMV, Getting credit report, applying for credit cards, etc.) has happened so far without issue.

The only reason I started researching this is because of what I had heard from friends and family from 5-10 years ago. It looks like the officers are catching on now and they know how to handle it because this is such a widespread issue.

Hence, I am leaning towards leaving it the way it is for my H1B visa and GC in the future, and not following the Redbus guide for fixing this as it seems like more of a hassle and comes with its own set of risks:

Anyone else in the same boat?

I will let others add their thoughts. But, if you plan to live in the US long term, it is highly recommended to get it fixed. Sometimes Issues could arise as duplicate names in federal processes, background checks, state benefits, etc.
It is not an easy thing to go through for sure…but, worth it in the long term. Again, you may get away without fixing it…but, at times, you could get issues. It is your discretion…
