I am travelling to USA from India on student VISA for fall 2016. There are some packed (sealed in container) ayurvedic medicines as well as some loose(packed in plastic pouch) ayurvedic medicines. Can I carry those to USA in check in baggage? Do I need to follow any official formalities for same?

If they are over the counter kind of medicines, it is fine. It is better to carry the receipt for the same as well to avoid issues.
If you have a prescription for the same, I suggest you carry the prescription and the purchase receipt. The whole idea is to ensure that they do not throw it at the customs.
There are no official formalities, it is the prescription and purchase receipt that are critical, if you get asked.
