I am currently in H4 visa and applied for H1B. I already have SSN due to my
previous L1 visa. Can I work immediately after my H1B is approved?

If this is your 1st H1B and its subject to FY2013 quota, you can start working only on 1st of October 2012. Please check your I-797 notice which has clearly menioned the date (valid from date).
