Completed my Btech from IIT in Mechanical. I was very much interested in Computer Science. But I couldnot get it then.
However, I completed my undergraduate studies with so much hard work and earned a decent CGPA of 8.5
After that, I got a satisfactory job offer in Mechanical Eng. and so joined it and now completed 2 yrs. But, I couldnot get on well with it.
I want to pursue my further studies in Comp Science. Is it possible for me to get an admission from a good university? Can I know the list of universities which offer CS admission even for students from Mechanical background?
Also, will universities accept LORs from professors in Mechanical ?
Yes, you can puruse further studies in Computer Science. Yes, you should be able to get admission from good schools. You have decent scores and LORs from professors in mechanical will help. You need to clearly articlulate in your SOP, your reason for change in your major. As I read, you are very passionate about CS and not happy with Mechanical job, so you have a passionate reason for change. Also, your IIT brand will help you a lot as well. As you already have a degree from top school in India, you should aim for the top 10 in US. Apply for the top schools in CS that are good, you should get admission.
But, the admission counselor that I visited, suggested me not to go for CS as the risk of getting an admit is very high, especially from 2013. How much of this is true?
My SOP is in initial stages of preparation and I need your valuable guidelines in shaping my SOP for change of degree. I want to add that, I am passionate about CS and I missed getting a Comp Science admit in IIT very narrowly, which is true. I also want to include that I joined in mechanical company because I got a campus placement, but I couldnot get on well with it. How else do you think I could prompt the university in giving me an admit in CS?
Thanks in advance.
Need your valuable suggestion on this.
You meant to say NOT getting admission is high ?
In my view, you should go for CS directly, you passion and dream should be articulated in your SOP. I do not believe in your admission counsellor’s words. Think logically, you are going for MS because you are not happy, not to get another degree right ? Do what you are passionate about. If you are not sure, you call up admissions office or write to them in top schools and seek their advice. They will help you and guide you rightly, talk to them.
