Can I renew passport after I sent my current passport for H1B filling and before stamping.?

Today date : 21-03-2016. I need to send all scanned copies of Passport for H1B processing. I do not have time for renew of passport. Passport expires in June 2017.

Can I renew my passport before stamping and after I sent scanned passport for processing. I this case I would be going for stamping with a new passport. Let me know what all I need to do if I renew before stamping.
