Minor's passport validity for H-1B visa stamping

Hello Experts,

I have an approved H-1B petition, planning to schedule visa interview at Chennai US Consulate. My query is:

  1. My son’s passport is getting expired in Jan-2015. Can I schedule his appointment for H-4 now?

  2. As there is a shortage of Passport books in India, I don’t want to go for the new passport and then apply for his H-4.

Please suggest.

I believe you need a 6-month validity on passport at time of application. You should be fine.

I am in same situation, will be attending H1B visa interview in first week of August 2014. But my daughter’s passport is valid till July 2015. So confused whether to apply H4 visa for her now or not.

As far the reply you received, it says it should be valid for 6 month, which it is, in your case and in my case.

So may I request you to please share your experience. Did you file H4 for your son and did it go fine for him
