If I apply for H1 and received a receipt, can I stay back.

I am on L2 visa and my visa will expire in mid of April 2013. So, if I apply for H1 on april 1,2013 through a company and if I have a receipt with me, can I stay back until the status is known.

 

If not, what are the other means that I can stay back in US.

You can stay back only if you have a valid I-94. When is your L-2 I-94 expiring?
