My H1b expires May 2013 and I would have 4 more months for the completion of my 6 year term on the H1. Can I apply an extension (as per visa rules) for this 4 month duration? I-140 has not been filed in my case. Please advise.

yes you can as long as you have proof for proj extension and your employer is ready for this 4month extension
